On Duty

25 Aug

“Same as what they taught you as a lifeguard; you have to save yourself before you can save anyone else.” – Phillip Meyer

du-ty

1.  something that one is expected or required to do by moral or legal obligation

2. an act or expression of respect

Over to you:

  • Who’s watching over you?
  • What duty might you owe yourself?

My loving partner watches over some aspects of my life, my dogs watch over my physical being as they put the run on any bears in our remote existence, and I watch over the rest. My duty for my self is to be the Grand Master of Fun in my life. Ya, now that feels like a fit. Appreciating all your Wednesday posts and all the replies... definitely Fun. Michael

Dear Grand Master of Fun, Could you watch over me too? greatly appreciated, Sandi

Coincidence? I just used the oxygen mask analogy yesterday. It is the only way that we can contribute and make the difference we want to make!

Me. Me because I am stronger and braver than I ever thought I could be. Me because every time I take a risk I learn I can do it. Being confident in ME has really help me enjoy the life I have not the one I wanted, thought I wanted. So now me watches over me! And that makes me more open and caring to others! And Happy!

Me watches over me! Love it Julie, thanks for sharing your words!

This may sound strange but I have felt the guiding hand of a higher power my entire life.

Not strange Ali. I appreciate how you phrased it, that you've felt it your entire life. It seems so easy to discount that or minimize it, you know?

Who's watching over me? Well, finally, after a number of years I'm watching over myself, creating, owning and taking full responsibility for my life. And, since I've come to that conclusion I've been more productive, jumped from a stifling job with many demands to a freelance writing career and in general come to love who I'm becoming. I have a duty to myself, and to my family to be all that I can be.. it sounds trite but.... Love your Wednesday Word post, I do something similar on one of my other blogs, where I use a writer's quote as a springboard for my thoughts.

Not trite at all Walker; lovely and authentic are the words that come to mind.

Hi Sandi! Yes a picture is worth a 1000 words, but since so is the quote and the word "duty" and so are the questions, I'm going to pick one so today I can keep it under the 1000 mark. (Not "duty" since that reminds me about conversations I've had about there being no such thing as sacrifice - despite the fact that yes, sacrifice is a word. I've looked and can't find any evidence of it, not even in Mother Theresa's life. That's what I meant about a hornet's nest; you can imagine I've gotten into some trouble with that one. Thanks for reminding me! Ah well.) The quote...I remember the first time I was on a plane with Jenna and they reminded us to put on our masks before our child's, and as quickly as I thought, "but" I thought "of course." And now I think about what a disservice - if you really want to help someone and you really care - to not care for the helper 1st. Can't wait to see what you pick out for us next Wed! xoK

Watching over me? My family and dear friends. Oh, and God, of course. My duty to myself (and others)? To love and be generous and kind. To follow my calling even, and perhaps most especially, when it's uncomfortable & scary.

I like that you used the word calling; seems so much more powerful!

This is a very interesting point of view. Your blog is refreshing, but I wish one could find more content, though. I am looking forward to reading more from you. Keep up the good work. thanks.

Thank you for the feedback. I've only just begun so I hope you'll hang in there - more content is on its way!
