The Words Don’t Fit

Sign.  Art.  Truth?

Whatever it is, it intrigued me enough to stop and take a photo.

I wondered at the meaning, what the artist thought when he/she came up with the idea.

I wondered what you’d come up with…

If there’s a story in there somewhere.

Or maybe a philosophy.

Or maybe it’s like when someone says all the right words but you know something’s off.

    At a birthday dinner. The birthday girl (33) invited us to a really cool little soirée in this intimate dining room. She’d called in the reservation and let them know she was vegetarian. When they brought in her plate she looked at it for a couple of beats. Our waiter asked if it was satisfactory and, the weirdest thing happened. Her voice was animated as she said, “Looks great, I’ll dig right in.” But her eyes and face were dead like cardboard. The waiter was standing behind her so he didn’t see, but I was right across from her and witnessed the whole thing. It freaked me the F out.  She ended up just wanting dessert anyway… Sandi – it was wild. The non look on her face.

      I could totally picture that look Linda! I’ve seen it before I’m sure and it always boggles my mind. So many people are afraid of speaking up, even for something as harmless as getting the meal exactly the way they want. I know I’ve been out with people who’ve felt uncomfortable if I made a request or sent a meal back. 

      Of course you know they didn’t stop me ;-)

      I’m glad I was a waitress in younger days, or I’d probably be just like your friend. Thanks to my experience, I know nobody’s going to get mad at me for sending a meal back. They either care and want you to be happy, or they don’t give a shit either way, lol. It’s just another plate.

      Update: I just realized most people aren’t worried about what the wait staff thinks, but what their friends think – duh. And it’s probably because *they* get embarrassed when someone sends something back. Fear of being embarrassed controls so many of us!

        I’ve always just asked myself, “What’s the worst that could happen if I did…?” and somehow that always gave me the courage to do the thing I thought might be embarrassing :)

    When I see this I automatically think of labels and how we use them to describe ourselves and others, but it doesn’t quite define us perfectly. There’s still that gray area, and that area within us that we can’t quite place a label on. :]

    Reminds me of the way most of us live, most of the time. Our words don’t match the picture we have for our future. We imagine what we want, but speak constantly of what is or what we are afraid will be.

      It’s not just the future that our words don’t match, it’s the present as well. We spend so much time worrying that we don’t actually speak of what we really want.

    I’m coming to this party late.  But the first thing I thought of when I saw your photo, Sandi, was “All talk and no action.”  I’m really tired of people wanting to get credit for thinking about something or talking about something.  Nope, not even gonna give ‘em partial credit because, “Talk is cheap.”  Because, “Actions speak louder than words.”  Hmm.  With all these quotes we’ve all heard a million times, I’m coming to the conclusion I’m not the only one who feels this way about all talk and no action.
