Formula for an Instant Self-Care Vacation

20 Oct

The Vagabondage Series:  The self-care focus continues with Elana Baxter’s formula for R&R.

Here I am, sitting at the keyboard, exhausted, spent and in serious need of a complete break. Here I am, writing for a coaching blog feeling like I should be singing ‘I’m Every Woman’ and talking about how I have it altogether, instead of admitting to a cast of many that I am truly, madly and deeply tired.

But since integrity and honesty are at the top of my list of values, I’m going to work that muscle and level with you:

I am overwhelmed and drained.

Have I forgotten what I said about letting go in last week’s post? No! I have let go, really! But, I had some loose ends to tie up and they are tying up right around my neck!

So, in honour of the theme of self-care this month, I’m sharing my plans to leave town and love myself.

That’s right. In support of my mental health, my physical well-being and inner peace, I am checking out of here.

The beauty of this vacation I’m taking is that it isn’t going to cost me much at all. The only thing I have to do is say yes to some things and no to a few others. You too can do this if you decide to, because I’m going to give you the formula right now.

My Formula for an Instant Self-Care Vacation

  • Make time: Close your eyes and listen to what your body/self wants. Is it a nap? An hour with a good book? A movie? A hot bath? Yoga or a walk? Time to write, paint, dance, play music? Listen intently and you will know.
  • Clear your calendar: Whatever you’ve got on there that does not need doing in this very instant can wait. Did you make plans? Cancel them, or make them work in favour of your self-care.
  • Unplug: Yes, that means phone, laptop, iGadget. . .OFF!
  • Feed your body and soul: If it’s meal time, eat something you love that will make you feel good inside and out. Have a cappuccino, cup of herbal tea, tall glass of lemon water, ice-cold beer. . .or nothing at all. Choose.
  • Do it: That thing you listened for earlier? Go. Enjoy it. Be in it 100%.

How this actually works:

1. You take a moment  to listen – really listen – to your body and the feelings that come up when you ask yourself ‘what do I need to do to feel rested/restored/peaceful right now?’

2. You decide to make space and time for your need to be fulfilled. Right now. Then, you do what it takes to make it happen.

3. iDisruptions are removed. You know that almost nothing is important enough to come between you and a chunk of time loving yourself.

4. Nourishment and connection with the body is a part of loving yourself and looking after your well-being. Choose your nourishment with both pleasure and health in mind.

5. Follow through, and live in the moment. Banish thoughts of what you think you should be doing. You’ll enjoy work more after giving yourself some time to relax.

I can’t wait to be unplugged and relaxed, unhindered by life’s never-ending to do list.

Tonight it’s all about me. And you, if you’re willing.
